BOCA DE IGUANAS
(The Camping Beach)
Boca de Iguanas is not a pueblo, but a beautiful beach area know for it's great RV camping location. The wide, open beach stretches for 6.5 km toward La Manzanilla in the southeast. The beach area here is backed by marshy wetlands where the land is flat and low. Boca is located on the Bahía de Tenacatita, 23km northwest of Melaque. Follow the 3 km paved road near mile marker (17km) on Mex 200. The intersection is well signed, so it's impossible to miss. There is no local bus service here, so take a cab or rent a car to get here. If you're a backpacker catch a long haul bus to the junction and hike in. Be sure to check out the old abandoned hotel "Bahía Tenacatita" down the beach which was destroyed by the 1995 earthquake. If you swim, be careful of the reported ocean cross currents here. There are two hotels and restaurants at Boca, and staples are available at the seasonal Mini-Market. There is an occasional crocodile to be seen in the lagoon next to the beach access road (careful - no fence). There is not much to do at Boca, which suits visitors just fine. Boca is however becoming a well known Boogie Boarding Destination. Driving on the playa with vehicles, quads or motorcycles is prohibited.
