Boca de Tomatlán is a small beachside
village (Playa de Boca) situated at the North end of the
Costa Alegre at the mouth of Rio El Potrero (Las Juntas). Boca
is located on the Bahía de
Banderas (flag bay) south of Puerto Vallarta. This is the
southern destination and turn around for PV city buses.
Pangas (launches) from Boca will ferry passengers to the remote beaches of
Las Animas, Quimixto or Yelapa. |

Tomatlán boasts a few hotels and
restaurants, plus a few neat things to see. In town you
have the historic Mission Church (circa 1770's). Along the
excess road from La Cumbre, there rock paintings (La Peñita
Pintadas). These ancient hieroglyphics are located at a
rocky outcrop on a small tributary of the Tomatlán river.
Hire a taxi to take you there. The Canjon de Peñas dam and
Playa Chalacatepec are also worth a look. |

Playa Majahuas
is home to the
Majahuas Biological Station managed by the Roca Negra fisherman's cooperative. They run a conservation
program for endangered sea turtles and wildlife protection of some
very unique animals and local area plants. This pristine but
remote strip of beach is bordered between a freshwater lagoon and
the open ocean. Beach access is restricted during turtle
egg-laying & hatching times. |

Chalacatepec
which is 9.9km from the highway. Playa Chalacatepec consists
of two beaches on either side of Punta Chalacatepec, the north
beach is best for swimming. After 8.4km you will come to a
junction and a gate. The beach is only 1.5km further.
If the gate is closed, then active turtle hatching is underway. |
