The Costa Careyes "Turtle Coast"
stretches for 13km and harbors a large number of beaches. Careyes is a resort and residential
area surrounding Bahía Careyes about 11km (6.5mi.) south of
Bahía Chamela. Careyes
encompasses the main beaches
of Playa Blanca,
Rosa, Careyitos, Careyes and Teopa. The first three bays
are taken up with luxury resort and condominium developments,
while playa Teopa is a protected turtle nesting
beach that is closely monitored by guards. Carey (kah-RAY)
is the native word for the endangered Hawksbill turtle. |
